Why your Google Business Profile isn't enough for AI search
Answer-first summary: A Google Business Profile helps you show up on Google Maps and in the local pack. It does very little to get you named inside an AI answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google's AI Overviews. Those engines pull from a much wider set of sources, and your GBP is not one of the main ones. If you want to be recommended by AI, you need structured information across your own website, third-party listings, and community sources like Reddit and Quora, not just a well-filled Google profile.
Most UK small businesses have spent the last five years being told the same thing. Fill in your Google Business Profile. Add photos. Get reviews. Post updates. And it was good advice, because it worked. GBP was the single highest-leverage thing a plumber, electrician, or accountant in a UK town could do.
That advice is now half the picture.
What GBP actually does
Google Business Profile feeds the local pack (the three-listing map result), Google Maps, and some of the mobile search experience. It is a Google-owned surface, showing Google-owned data, ranked by Google's local algorithm. A strong GBP still matters. It is not going away.
But it is a Google product. It is not a signal that other AI engines pay any real attention to.
What AI engines actually pull from
When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's own AI Overviews put together a recommendation, they are not reading your GBP. They are reading:
- Your own website, especially the pages that clearly explain who you are, what you do, and where you do it
- Structured data on those pages (LocalBusiness schema, FAQ schema, service schema)
- Third-party listings and directories with consistent name, address, phone
- Editorial mentions in news, blogs, and industry sites
- Community sources like Reddit, Quora, and specialist forums
- Review platforms beyond Google (Trustpilot, Checkatrade, Which?, and vertical-specific ones)
- Wikipedia and Wikidata where relevant
Notice what is not on that list. Your Google Business Profile.
Google's own AI Overviews will sometimes surface GBP data, because Google can reach into its own graph. But ChatGPT and Perplexity cannot. They are working from what has been crawled, cited, and repeated across the open web.
The practical gap
Here is what this looks like in practice. A local business with a five-star GBP, hundreds of reviews, and a healthy local pack presence can still be completely invisible to ChatGPT.
Ask ChatGPT to recommend an electrician in your town. It will name three businesses. Very often, none of them are the ones dominating Google Maps. They are the ones with a clear website, a Wikipedia-adjacent presence, mentions in trade press, and a citation trail across Reddit and Quora threads.
That is the gap. GBP wins Google Maps. Structured, cited, referenced content wins AI answers.
What to do about it
Five things, in rough order of leverage for a UK SMB.
One. Make your website legible to a machine. Every service page needs a clear, plain-language answer to the questions someone might ask. Not marketing waffle. Direct, factual, one-sentence answers followed by the detail. If a language model reads your homepage and cannot work out in one paragraph what you do, where, and for whom, you are not getting cited.
Two. Add structured data. LocalBusiness schema on your homepage and location pages. FAQPage schema on service pages that already contain question-and-answer content. Organization schema linked across the site. This is not optional if you want to be cited. It is how engines confirm what your site is claiming.
Three. Get consistent across the web. Same business name, same address, same phone, same opening hours everywhere. GBP, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yell, Yelp, industry directories. Inconsistency is a citation-killer.
Four. Get named on community platforms. Reddit and Quora are heavily scraped by AI engines. A useful, non-promotional presence in the right threads is worth more than another citation directory. Answer questions in your field. Do not drop links. Let people ask who you are.
Five. Earn editorial mentions. Local press, industry blogs, guest posts on established sites. A single line in a trade publication that names you and your town will do more for AI citation than a month of GBP updates.
The one-line version
Google Business Profile is table stakes for Google Maps. It is close to irrelevant for ChatGPT and Perplexity. If AI search matters to your business, the work is on your own site, on third-party sources, and on the community platforms the models actually read.
FAQ
Does GBP help with AI Overviews?
Sometimes, because Google's AI Overviews can access Google's own knowledge graph. It does not help with ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude.
Should I stop maintaining my GBP?
No. Keep it up. It still drives local pack and Maps visibility. Just do not treat it as your AI search strategy.
What matters most for AI citation as a small business?
A clearly written website with structured data, consistent listings across the web, and a genuine presence on community platforms like Reddit.
How do I know if AI engines are recommending my business?
Ask them. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Mode. Ask for a recommendation the way a customer would. If you are not named, you have work to do.
